The History of Vanrhynsdorp
Vanrhynsdorp has a rich and layered history that reflects both its natural surroundings and the people who have called this area home over centuries. Originally known as Troe-Troe, the area was named by the Khoi-San — the indigenous people of the region. The name is also linked to the river that flows through the town, a vital water source in this otherwise dry landscape.
The town was later established as a farming and trading centre, serving the surrounding agricultural community and travellers moving between the Western Cape and Namaqualand. Over time, Vanrhynsdorp became an important stop along regional routes, known for its resilience and strong community spirit. Like much of Namaqualand, the town has always adapted to challenging conditions — from dry climates to more recent events such as the 2023 floods, which once again showed the strength and unity of its people.
Today, Vanrhynsdorp stands as a proud small town that honours its history while continuing to grow and evolve.
